Mike's Adventure

This page gives a snapshot of my life in Fukue when I'm not doing anything especially interesting.

I work from 8-4 five days a week.  If its a good week, I'll be teaching at one of the smaller schools, or on an Island so I can ride the boat.  If its very good then I'll be teaching elementary school children who are always great fun.  I plan one or two lessons a week, and improve them as I try them with different classes.  I focus more on making them enjoyable and testing their listening and speaking rather teaching them a specific point about the English language.  In my spare time at school I usually study some Japanese, plan a lesson or read a book or newspaper.

After work, I cook - I've learned a lot of new dishes while I've been here.  Some new Indian food, some Japanese food and some cakes and snacks.  My cheesecake rocks.  In the evening, I usually have something sporty to do, I play badminton two or three times a week and I do Karate as well.

This is my Karate Club.  Its tough, but good fun.

This is my Karate teacher.  Hard as nails.

I also try to swim once a week.  I couldn't swim at all before, I can do about three laps of the pool now.  The best thing I have here is ADSL and my laptop, they let me stay in touch with friends and family in England, watch TV and movies in English, and shop or study online.

On the weekend, I usually do something with Mike or one of the others and see a bit more of the Island.  And I usually rest the other day, clean my place and get ready for the next week.  If I'm not doing any sport, I'll eat out with a friend or two, or play some chess.  I'm pretty busy most of the time.
